THE ORIGIN OF MEDICINE AS A SCIENCE

According to historians, ancient egypt in Africa was where one of the greatest civilisation began first in the world and through this cradles of civilisation, the contribution of Africa to the origin of science and it application had been very remarkable.Due to the Egyptian love for learning in all it branches, one of the songs intended for school boys was sang as "Give the heart to learning and love it like a mother .Spend no day in idleness or thy will be flogged". These scholastic consignment however contributed in no small measures to the realisation and development of science in the world today.

Medicine in no doubt originated in Africa from Egypt. The bodies of pharaoh and other officials where mummified by treating with spices and ointment to preserved the bodies fresh(a medical fit that has been marvelous to even modern scientists).Egyptian discovered many drugs that became widely used by Greek physicians and most of the Greek practical device in surgery were also from the Egyptian origin.

Historicaly, greek litretures made it posible to know the gradual decrease in the importance assigned to charm and magic, and the growth of rational ideas among early greek physicians in medicine.Greek medicine came in it pure form about 585 BC till the rise of the Roman empire and it borrows several ideas from Mesopotamian astrology and anatomy. Medicine as study was establish as a science by Hippocrates in about 585 BC and was continued by other scientist who dissected corpses to increase their knowledge of the human body. The Hippocratic's oaths which a medical doctor takes on qualification was based on the principles laid down by Hippocrates of Cos.

Aristotle and others like Harvey, Von Haller and John Hunter were also of vast influence on medical thougth. Aristotle compiled a labourious account of the animals known in his days with many accurate details of their anatomical structures, and after his death in 322 BC, a great medical school was found in Alexandra.Harvey started physiology on it true course by his discovery of the circulation of the blood through experiment on animals. Von Haller (1708-1777) and John Hunter (1928-93) intensified the developement of study of anatomy and physiology.
